With Kanro’s support, AirSpot is advancing & expanding key initiatives:
Privacy-Preserving API:
Integrating real-time CO₂ data with mapping services to enable transparent, privacy-focused visualisation of indoor air quality.
New Device Form Factors & Add-Ons:
Enhancing the versatility of the AirSpot monitor with new designs and accessories for vehicles and fixed indoor installations, ensuring adaptability across diverse environments.
Donating Devices via Global Clean Air Initiatives:
Making AirSpot CO₂ devices available worldwide through a network of Clean Air Initiatives empowers communities and individuals to monitor indoor CO₂ levels and improve their air quality. With these tools, people can make informed decisions about how to act and publicly share their measurements on IAQ maps—helping to improve indoor air quality for all.
Educational Resources:
Creating targeted content and outreach to increase global awareness and understanding of IAQ.
Open Source:
Developing all software and hardware as open source, fostering collaboration, transparency, and community-driven innovation.
Together, these efforts are part of a global movement for better indoor air: empowering people everywhere to monitor, document, improve, and advocate for the air they breathe indoors.
Why Indoor Air Quality Matters To All Of Us
Indoor spaces are hotspots for the transmission of airborne diseases such as COVID-19, influenza, measles, and tuberculosis.
Poor ventilation allows infectious aerosols to linger, putting everyone at risk—especially in schools, offices, public transport, and healthcare settings. Elevated CO₂ levels—above 800 ppm—are a proven indicator of poor indoor air quality and a practical proxy for infection risk.
Studies confirm that high CO₂ not only increases the likelihood of disease transmission but also leads to headaches, fatigue, reduced concentration, impaired decision-making, and even poor sleep quality, impacting health, well-being, and productivity.
The primary and most immediate impact of poor indoor air quality is on the individual, followed by increased strain on the healthcare system, and finally, broader consequences for society and the economy as a whole.
Why CO₂ is a Good Indicator for Indoor Air Quality
CO₂ is produced by human respiration and accumulates in poorly ventilated spaces. Monitoring CO₂ is cost-effective, reliable, and actionable—making it the ideal proxy for assessing indoor air quality and infection risk.
How the AirSpot CO₂ Device Works
AirSpot’s lightweight, portable CO₂ monitor uses the latest sensor technology to provide accurate, real-time CO₂ readings.
The AirSpot device redefines portability: At just 3.6 x 4.8 x 1.2 cm and a featherlight 17 grams—about one-third the weight of a chicken egg—it’s designed to slip effortlessly into the daily routine, whether clipped to a bag, worn on the wrist, or attached to a smartphone, empowering people to monitor air quality anywhere.
The AirSpot app, available for free on iOS and Android, allows users to track their data, set alerts, and share insights with their community.
Always Moving Forward: Open for Ideas, Contributors, and Partners
Looking ahead to a future where healthy indoor air is the norm, we’re eager to connect with new partners and a growing community. The Kanro grant is a powerful catalyst, helping us take concrete steps toward a world where clean air is valued and protected by all.
Making healthy indoor air the standard goes far beyond technology. It’s about education, advocacy, and community engagement—building a culture where everyone understands the importance of the air we share and takes action to safeguard it.
Every bit of support—whether through purchases, contributions, partnerships, or spreading the word—brings us closer to making clean, safe air a reality for all.
