Carbon dioxide levels (CO2 ppm) provide a great indication of air quality - 400ppm represents fresh air.
We breath out carbon dioxide - the more people in an indoor environment and the poorer the ventilation the greater the CO2 level will be.
The closer the CO2 level is to this 400ppm baseline the fresher the air - simple.
